Australian design firm Qube Konstrukt sent a note that they have launched a new website featuring some slick new work.
Albert Exergian recently completed a series of posters on the theme of popular TV shows. He kept with an extremely minimal approach throughout the entire series. Minimal is the new black (and I think it is here to stay for a while).
Sebastian Jansson’s people sent a note alerting me to his beautiful geometric furniture design. I would kill to have a couple of those stools pulled up next to my bar at home.
“Of Italian descent, Guido Mocafico was born in Switzerland in 1962. A specialist in still life, he works regularly for international magazines such as Numèro, Paris Vogue, Big, The Face, Self-Service, and Wallpaper. He has also undertaken numerous advertising campaigns for Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Clinique, Shiseido, and Hermës. Over the past four years, Mocafico has been at work on a personal project related to architecture, and he continues to explore aesthetic and scientific themes in nature. He lives in Paris. His book, Serpens, can be purchased through Steidl.”
I was really blown away by his serpent photographs. Just beautiful. Discovered via (and paragraph above lifted from) Feature Shoot.
Eugène & Pauline have printed a big 12 page newspaper book featuring one-colored visuals from artist Geneviève Gauckler. The paper is a silk-screen-print handmade by the publishers. It looks like the pages could make for some nice posters to hang around the home or just to peruse while you make some orange juice and eat a croissant.
The London based gallery, ‘PlanetPatrol’ is curating a small retrospective of work from contemporary Japanese artist Sal. The exhibition will take place from the 21st November through to the 26th. The ‘Project Room’ of the gallery will also feature a selection of international artists from both PlanetPatrol & Gallery Nosco. Artists will include: Matt Small, Dave the Chimp, SheOne, Peter Taylor, Jaws, Brusk-Plisson, Collin van der Sluijs, Eduardo Recife, Bom.K & Bruno9li.
Sounds like good gig.
Studio Output have update with so many new projects to keep your soul warm this winter. It’s nice to see a new direction forming for Studio Output in these updates, including a wealth of hi-end branding, there’s still the hard hitters in there though with some amazing new prints for Ministry of Sound (above picture). Its a joy to see the work they produce and its always good to see a studio go from strength to strength in these times!
The Imaginary Foundation got in touch to let me know that they have launched their first blog. It is again filled with the kind of inspirational tidbits that support their philosophy. They are also releasing a new line today. The second image above is from their new line that was just released. The first image was taken from one of their earlier shirts and is still probably my all time favorite. IF was kind enough to send me some shirts recently and I was honesty pretty shocked at how well the image holds up on their shirts and how true the color is.
Alexander Martinez just released his new zine Old Glory, published by Kaugummi Books. Alexander has a great eye, and his url is “stop internet romance dot com” for goodness sakes.
Midwestern (yeah Midwest represent!) illustrator Micah Lidberg has updated with a new website and a few new pieces of work. From those I have spoken with, all I hear is how nice of a guy he is and how hard he works at what he does. I was told that he actually creates some of his illustrations at a very large scale and then shrinks them down to maintain all of the detail. I am not sure if that is exactly how he generates some of his detail-rich imagery, but nonetheless it is a party for the eyes.
I was given a signed print of his work from Hugo & Marie, and it is one of my favorite art prints. The colors in the print are gorgeous. It’s a shame we spend so much time looking at design and illustration online when in order to truly understand and feel it you really need to see it in print. The same can definitely be said for Micah’s work. When you do see his illustrations in print, they are much much more striking.
Unfortunately another great agency BB/Saunders has gone to the wall in this tough economic climate. They were one of my favourite and most inspiring studios to look to during my time as a student. Hopefully it wont be too long before we see them moving onto something new and exciting - good luck to them in whatever they do.
I have posted the GDI’09 website before but ran across this poster at Dropular today and had to repost the GDI website. The site was created to showcase the work of 2009 graduates of BA(Hons) Graphic Design & BA(Hons) Illustration at the University of Brighton. There is just some stellar work in the student portfolios. Really inspirational.
Thomas Feichtner lives and works in Linz, Austria. After his school years in Düsseldorf he graduated at the University of Arts and Industrial Design in Linz. He has since established his own industrial design practice and has also established an office for visual communication. His furniture design is stunning. I am a self-professed chairoholic and Feichtner’s chair designs are absolutely fantastic.
I am a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick. I am also a huge fan of his landmark achievement in film that in my opinion has never been matched, 2001: A Space Odyssey. I am also a fan of Kubrick’s favorite font, Futura. Tonight while watching that movie with my computer in my lap (like any good multitasking American) I thought it might be fun to knock out some posters celebrating 3 of my great loves with 3 different posters. I realized in the process just how remarkable the movie really is that it can be represented through such minimal symbology. Anyway, it was a fun little exercise and you can see the other 2 posters in the print section of the site. I am not sure I could print a run of these without getting in trouble but I will probably print some just to hang around my home.
Tom Balchin is a recent graphic design graduate from Central St Martins. He has just completed an internship and is currently seeking either freelance or full time employment. He has some beautiful typographical posters in his portfolio.
Scott Hansen A.K.A. ISO50 has made his latest 12″ Tycho album available for preorder in his online store. As always, the artwork and design for the album are beautiful. The first 50 are signed and numbered. Every copy comes with an alternate artwork poster.
I don’t have a record player but I just bought one anyway.

On a rainy afternoon, a child plays with his snails and falls along with them into a dreamy circus. I guess I don’t have to mention the visuals are stunning.
