Just found out about Qube Konstrukt, a genuine multi-disciplinary agency working out of Richmond, Australia. Their bio states “time allowed for experimentation and play are vital components of our studio methodology”, that’s clearly reflected in the vibrancy and sense of fun which is threaded throughout their work.

Really admire the unassuming level of sophistication which runs through the portfolio of packaging specialists Designers Journey.

I couldn’t find out much about Vincent Perrottet, except that he’s French and that his work is quite incredible! If your français is up to scratch then you might enjoy this interview with the man himself.

Area 17 have launched an open project archive showcasing the last 10 years of their work using their lightweight PHP5 file browser app Subfolio. A great way to show off work in progress or designs that never found a way through to the final round, the archive shows a visible progression of quality in Area 17’s work.

I came across this image taken in 2006 of FriendsWithYou’s rather excellent Sky Walkers parade which opened Art Basel Miami. According to FWY “Skywalkers featured 18 giant blimps designed by FWY and various artists and included over 300 volunteers, a high school marching band, full event staff, and thousands of attendees”.

I was shocked to hear of the fall of another great studio this morning when I heard that BB/Saunders seems to have shut its doors. This message is currently displayed on their site. Real shame I liked a lot of the work that they did particularly the Five stuff. Hopefully out of something old will grow something new. Good luck to all involved.

Chris-to-pher notified us about his recent update. He got some nice work to show and he’s looking for a job in the UK (England to be more precise). Use him.
Just found this great video from the Smithsonian traveling exhibition American Letterpress: The Art of Hatch Show Print, this video shows you the art of letterpress printing as practiced by a 125-year-old Nashville, TN, print shop. Learn why only a handful of letterpress shops still exist in American and why this one is so influential in the music and entertainment industry. A great look at the craft and well worth 8 minutes of your time. Makes me want to go to Nashville.

I recently discovered Learndro Castelao intricate screen prints. Usually relatively small but very detailed 5+ colour screen prints with ultra thin strokes that show off some real prowess screen technique.
Unforuntately his shop online isn’t working but they’re available to buy at Kemsitry Gallery where I saw them last week.

A web-based project, Thirty Conversations on Design collects the thoughts of 30 of the world’s leading designers, architects and authors. Thirty Conversations… is  the brainchild of Joe Cecere, Creative Director at Little&Company, a strategic branding and design firm located in Minneapolis in the US.
Each participant in the project is asked to consider two questions: “What single example of design inspires you most?†and “What problem should design solve next?†— the varied responses make
for compelling viewing. Among the first batch of interviews are Pentagram’s Paula Scher, branding stalwart Massimo Vignelli
and, my favourite, the irrepressible Professor Erik Spiekermann.
Enjoy.

Burnley is a large market town in the borough of Burnley in Lancashire, England, with a population of around 73,500. It has a 24 lane bowling alley, a 9-screen multiplex cinema and can now boast a new logo as part of a £110,000 re-branding scheme to improve the town’s image. That’s the good news. The bad news (and that’s just my opinion) is the city has chosenthat logo.
Developed by Burnley Vision Board after it secured £300,000 of funding from the North West Development Agency (NWDA), the ‘visual expression’ consists of a computer-generated, three-dimensional image of lots of multi-coloured, tangled circles. That much everyone can agree on. It’s how to interpret the marque where opinions begin to differ.
I’ve seen it described as ‘gutsy’ offering a ‘pretty original interpretation on growth and movement’. Also, as having an ‘amorphous nature’ which lends itself to new media, boldly breaking away from the accepted conventions of static identities. Make your own minds up on that by visiting the website.
Counilor Gordon Birtwistle, leader of Burnley Council, said “Burnley might have been a mess eight or nine years ago, but this shows we’re on the up. It’s bright and unusual and really exciting. I think it’s a brave choice, but I haven’t heard anyone with a bad word to say about it.
Others have been less complimentary, Conservative Councilor Jonathan Gilbert said “The logo is not the best I have seen. Animated it looks like some kind of deformed insect. Is it dynamic? I don’t think so.”
With some suggesting “Burnley looks like a mess”, “it looks like an exploded slinky” or ” the result of a middle manager being let loose on a 3D rendering program.”
Most intriguing/worryingly was Counilor Gordon Birtwistle boast they “had beaten stiff competition from others who had been interested in using the logo.” How is that possible? Was the same logo touted around by some door-to-door identity salesman? If that was the case then surely Burnley’s new identity can have absolutely no relevance to the location?
The Lancashire Telegraph’s poll shows 84% of people who voted ‘hate’ the new logo. What do you guys think?

Jimmy Turrell’s illustrations and graphic artworks remind me a bit of drug induced night terrors in places but despite make your pants a little more moist than usual, there’s some good illustrations for his impressive set of clients including the like of the Gaudrian and Glasto 2009. It seems to be pretty clear in his work that music and retro gaming icons play a big part in inspiring Jimmy’s material.
